What is improv comedy?

Short form improv comedy is a style of improvisational comedy in which performers create scenes, characters, and jokes on the spot based on audience suggestions, often using a set of pre-determined games or formats. In short form improv, scenes are typically shorter and more focused on rapid-fire jokes and comedic situations than in long form improv. Examples of short form games include “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”, “Scenes from a Hat”, and “Party Quirks”. Short form improv is often performed in comedy clubs, theaters, and festivals, and is a popular form of entertainment due to its fast-paced and unpredictable nature.

Do I have to be 21 to see your improv comedy show? Is your show appropriate for minors?

In most cases, our shows are open to all ages. When we perform at the Sawubona Creativity Project, no food or drinks are served, so attendees of any age are welcome. However, if you see us performing at a different location, there may be age restrictions. Our current weekly performance location is a BYOB theater, so please bring drinks or snacks responsibly. We cannot provide cups or store anything at our location.

Please note that he N Crowd’s Friday night shows are not “family-friendly”. The content of our show is solely based on the suggestions we receive from the audience, and it varies from week to week. Therefore, we cannot predict with certainty how each show will go, but we strive to maintain classiness. If you are comfortable with occasional adult situations and language, then our show should be enjoyable for you.

A Brief History of The N Crowd

IN FEBRUARY 2005, Philadelphia comedians Ray Reese and Emily Dufton held auditions to form a new improv comedy troupe, The N Crowd. Performances were first held in April 2005 at a martial arts studio in the Old City part of Philadelphia.

IN OCTOBER 2005, The N Crowd shifted performances to the Society Hill Playhouse. Unlike the martial arts studio that required disassembling and then re-assembling the stage every week, this performance space had a lighting system, a permanent stage, a box office, and a small dressing room!

THEN IN JULY 2006, The N Crowd was a featured in their first article in the Philadelphia Style magazine and took 1st runner up in their “Best of Style” contest for that year. (Best Comedy Club and Best Theater Group.) In the article, The N Crowd was quoted to be “Philadelphia’s premiere improv troupe.” As a result of publication of that article, the troupe began to perform at various colleges, fundraising, and other events. The N Crowd ended its run at Society Hill Playhouse and moved back to Old City to take up residence at The Actors Center.

IN 2008, 2010, and 2013 The N Crowd was named “Best Comedy Club” by PHL17’s City Voter’s Hot List. More than 10 years, 600 shows and 50+ cast members later, The N Crowd still performs every Friday night at 257 N. 3rd Street. They have also appeared at comedy festivals in Philadelphia and throughout the country, as well as performed for local colleges and corporate clients.

IN AUGUST OF 2017, after 11 fantastic years at The Actors Center, the N Crowd moved over to a bigger and better theater, Good Good Comedy on 215 N 11th Street.

IN FEBRUARY OF 2018, After a successful run of shows at Good Good Comedy Theater, we moved over to the Philly Improv Theater, located at 2030 Sansom. We are beyond excited to call PHIT our new home. In fact, you’ll often find N Crowders here teaching classes and performing in their many sketch, improv, and other variety programming.

We’re so thankful that you joined us when we moved from the Actors Center and hope you’ll join us at our new home! Shows will still be every Friday (Now at 7 pm.) Stay connected with us to find out about additional shows around town and special events.

Cast members of The N Crowd have performed all over the world and have trained in Chicago, Canada, New York, and Philadelphia. The combined talents of the cast are multifaceted. Collectively, they have trained in theater, dance, clown, film, music, art, science, and law – to name a few. In addition to performing in The N Crowd, other projects include everything from professional theater productions and renaissance fairs to grunge parody bands and stand-up acts.
