A Brief History of The N Crowd
In February 2005, Philadelphia comedians Ray Reese and Emily Dufton held auditions to form a new improv comedy troupe, The N Crowd. Performances were first held in April 2005 at a martial arts studio in the Old City part of Philadelphia.
In October 2005, The N Crowd shifted performances to the Society Hill Playhouse. Unlike the martial arts studio that required disassembling and then re-assembling the stage every week, this performance space had a lighting system, a permanent stage, a box office, and a small dressing room!
Then in July 2006, The N Crowd was a featured in their first article in the Philadelphia Style magazine and took 1st runner up in their “Best of Style” contest for that year. (Best Comedy Club and Best Theater Group.) In the article, The N Crowd was quoted to be “Philadelphia’s premiere improv troupe.” As a result of publication of that article, the troupe began to perform at various colleges, fundraising, and other events. The N Crowd ended its run at Society Hill Playhouse and moved back to Old City to take up residence at The Actors Center.
In 2008, 2010, and 2013 The N Crowd was named “Best Comedy Club” by PHL17’s City Voter’s Hot List. More than 10 years, 600 shows and 50+ cast members later, The N Crowd still performs every Friday night at 257 N. 3rd Street. They have also appeared at comedy festivals in Philadelphia and throughout the country, as well as performed for local colleges and corporate clients.
Cast members of The N Crowd have performed all over the world and have trained in Chicago, Canada, New York, and Philadelphia. The combined talents of the cast are multifaceted. Collectively, they have trained in theater, dance, clown, film, music, art, science, and law – to name a few. In addition to performing in The N Crowd, other projects include everything from professional theater productions and renaissance fairs to grunge parody bands and stand-up acts.
